Power of Attorney Abuse

An article in Maclean’s magazine provides an overview of the growing problem of Power of Attorney abuse. This occurs where an attorney does not live up to their fiduciary responsibilities when managing the donor’s finances. Unfortunately, due to the nature in which many Power of Attorney documents are drafted it is often difficult to detect these abuses before they become a serious problem. The article does a good job of outlining some practical solutions to this problem.
